Exclusive: Sky Sports pundit David Prutton issues exciting West Brom prediction
Junior Firpo’s opening goal in the draw at Elland Road over the weekend was nullified by Darnell Furlong’s equalizer, leaving Albion holding onto the fourth and final position in the top six with eleven league games left in the season.
With seven teams separated by five points as the second division heats up, the Baggies now have a superior goal differential that pushes Blackburn Rovers into seventh place. However, a number of clubs will be interested in extending their season come May.
Nevertheless, Prutton thinks Albion has what it takes to finish in the top six for the second straight season, and Mowbray’s return to the team will help them stabilize following Carlos Corberan’s exit.
The Baggies’ resiliency in the draw with Leeds will be crucial over the coming months, as the team they are chasing doesn’t appear to be giving up on the play-off spots.
Even though Mowbray has only lost three of his nine games in charge since rejoining the Hawthorns in January, a comfortable position in the top six has grown more precarious as the season has gone on due to a run of just four league victories in the 13 games following Corberan’s departure.
Prutton is happy to see the 61-year-old back in the dugout this season after his well-documented health issues. Prutton thinks the former Middlesbrough manager will have a wealth of expertise to help his team win and advance to the end-of-lottery in the upcoming months.
Prutton told Football League World exclusively, “Yes, of course they can,” in response to the question of whether Albion might place in the top six. First of all, Tony Mowbray has experience promoting teams. I think, first and foremost, it is terrific to see him back in the midst of it, and I am stating that now given I have an affection for him personally and professionally.
“His ability to focus on the day-to-day training of players, the addition of new players, the reliance on experience, and the formation of a team to continue and compete at the highest level demonstrates exactly what he is capable of.”
“They are presently undefeated against the top four, which may sound like I’m giving them a lot of credit considering West Brom’s past performance in the Premier League, but I’m not.
