Former Huddersfield Town striker Lucas Akins has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving
A former Huddersfield Town striker has admitted causing the death of a cyclist when he crashed into him while driving his Mercedes G Wagon.
Lucas Akins, 36, of Heys Road, Thongsbridge, near Holmfirth, hit cyclist Adrian Daniel, 33, on Huddersfield Road in Netherton on Thursday, March 17, 2022.
Mr Daniel was rushed to hospital with serious injuries, but died ten days later. Akins appeared at Leeds Crown Court on Tuesday, March 4, before His Honour Judge Menary, and entered a plea of guilty to the charge of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving.
The court was told Akins was of previous good character. Prosecutor Carmel Pearson said the plea was accepted by the Crown, who had relayed the information to Mr Daniel’s family.
Judge Menary told Akins: “You have pleaded guilty to the offence at count 2. I am imposing an interim disqualification and you are now disqualified from obtaining or getting a driving licence. You must not drive on a public road.”
The judge released Akins on bail and the case was adjourned for reports. A sentencing hearing will take place on April 24 later this year.
