Burnley FC urged to stop short of “weird transfer” for 28-year-old

Burnley’s summer preparations appear to be moving forward despite the fact that the transfer season has closed. The Clarets are interested in signing Wycombe Wanderers’ Daniel Udoh.

According to Africa Foot, the 28-year-old is a key figure in the Chairboys’ promotion campaign and is expected to join Scott Parker’s team in the summer.

The Clarets have previously made an offer of £850,000, but with the transfer window closed, Mike Dodds’ team is cautious to start talks due to their current Championship bid.

On a personal note, Udoh seems an odd option for the Lancashire club. The Nigerian striker joined Adams Park in the summer, having previously played for Shrewsbury Town in League One.

When he joined Salop from AFC Telford in 2019, he impressed at the Croud Meadow, but 38 goals in 181 games is not a record that will translate well to the Championship. At Wycombe, he has seven more goals, but Richard Kone’s form has kept him out of the starting lineup.

If this information is correct, this appears to be an unusual decision. If the Clarets remain in the Championship, he might serve as a dependable backup option.

To get a Turf Moor perspective on the alleged interest in Daniel Udoh, Football League World spoke with

Will Lancaster expressed dissatisfaction with Burnley’s interest in signing the Nigerian striker.

“It would certainly be a weird transfer, one that I wouldn’t have predicted,” Lancaster told reporters.

“He has spent the majority of his career in the lower leagues, and even when he joined for Crewe, he had yet to reach double figures in non-league. It is not something I would be happy with.

“He has had a couple good years at Shrewsbury, but nothing sticks out. He has moved to Wycombe, and while they are performing well this season, there is no Championship experience, particularly for a side at the top end of the Championship, as opposed to Plymouth or Oxford, where it would be more feasible. We are a team with multimillion-pound players at the top of the league.

“It’s a strange one, unless he’s willing to be a backup at best and a marginal player, which I don’t see him doing at 28 years old. He will demand playing time, and he is performing well at the top of League One this season.

“It isn’t what we need this summer and even beyond if we don’t secure promotion – especially not for close to £1 million.”

If Udoh is offered a move to Burnley, he may consider the possibility that both teams could end up in the same division next season.

Wycombe face competition from Wrexham and Stockport County for the second automatic promotion berth to the Championship.

League One Table (03/03/25)
Pos Team P GD Pts
1 Birmingham City 32 35 76
2 Wycombe Wanderers 33 26 64
3 Wrexham 33 20 62
4 Stockport County 34 18 60

Burnley’s predicament is extremely similar, and while they have every opportunity of moving up through the automatics or play-offs, if they don’t, the Chairboys might end up in the same level.

If that’s the case, the striker would undoubtedly prefer to stay at Adams Park, where he’s more likely to get consistent playing time. Burnley fans would not begrudge him this, either, since many would have hoped for a more prominent attacking option to arrive this summer.
