After a challenging start to the season, Sunderland Women suffered a significant setback when captain Brianna Westrup was declared out for an extended period of time.
After breaking her fibula during the first-day loss to Birmingham City, Westrup is anticipated to miss the remainder of the year. Sunderland is optimistic that she will be able to make a comeback in January. “We must have faith in our procedures. Even though the outcome was not what we had hoped for, our performance versus Southampton had improved. It is imperative that we examine both our areas of strength and weakness. In the first half, we had some pretty nice opportunities. Our conceded goals are really disheartening and easily avoidable. The statistics indicate that we might have gained much more from the match, but we must learn from our mistakes and have the courage to take risks when the ball is in play. We want to ensure that anyone who scores against us has to put in a lot of effort to do so.”
Reay was heartened to see Eleanor Dale receive so many opportunities even though she was unable to register a goal. She is confident that the striker will eventually score if her team can continue to provide opportunities for her.
“Eleanor was very disappointed, it’s the first penalty she’s ever missed so she was devastated,” Reay added.
“We trust her, though, and she’ll be on the next one. She will also put the ball in the net for us if we continue to create opportunities high up the pitch.”
