Grant McCann, manager of Doncaster Rovers, has delivered an encouraging report on Zain Westbrooke and James Maxwell before of Saturday’s League Two home game against nearby Chesterfield.

Westbrooke hasn’t played since defeating Gillingham on September 7, and Maxwell is recovering from a foot injury sustained on the season’s first day.

McCann provided an injury report before of the Spireites game, saying: “We’re a touch better than we have been. The squad is in a strong spot.

“Obviously, it’s the third game in a week, but we’ve had no problems in the other two.

“Zain Westbrooke and James Maxwell have resumed training in the last several days. We’ll see whether Saturday arrives too quickly for them.

“But we are starting to see better and greater numbers on the training ground, which is really encouraging.

“It’s been gratifying that we’ve maintained the bulk of the players in good spirits. Last season, we probably had 15 or 16 guys in the rehab room. So there’s a difference, and it’s really helped us with everything.

Richard Wood, a former Rotherham United and Sheffield Wednesday defender, and Tom Nixon, a former Hull City player, are both out of action due to ankle surgery.

“Richard and Tom are the next two to return. Tom was out doing a little something this morning. He healed from his first injury, but he picked up a calf problem on the opposite side, which we are currently managing. He’s probably still a week or 10 days away.

“Woody is still a few ways away. He is out of the boot, which is good, and he is walking around normally. He’s only warming up at the gym and hasn’t ventured outside yet. So his next step will be to go outside and get moving again.
