Alan Smith predicts who will finish in the top two – Leeds United, Sheffield United or Burnley
Despite dropping points on Saturday against West Brom at Elland Road, Leeds United remain three points clear of Sheffield United at the top of the Championship table.
Leeds had been five points clear but with Junior Firpo’s goal cancelled out by Darnell Furlong, Sheffield United had the chance to close the gap to three and they did just that – beating QPR away from home.
With 11 games to play, Leeds are on 76 points with a goal difference of 50. Leeds are 11 points better off than they were during 2019-20, the season in which Marcelo Bielsa guided Leeds to the Premier League.
While there are only three points separating Leeds and Sheffield United, there are eight between Leeds and third-placed Burnley. The Clarets play a game in hand on Tuesday and Alan Smith has had his say.
Elland Road icon Alan Smith has told Football League World that he believes his old side will finish in first place in the Championship, while predicting Burnley to edge Sheffield United out and secure 2nd place.
“Leeds have put themselves in a great position, especially with a eight-point gap to Burnley in third. It’s difficult as, like Leeds last year, one of those two teams will feel aggrieved like last year in not going up.
“I think Leeds will be one, and a sneaky feeling that Burnley will be the other just because they are so solid defensively, I think it’s 12 clean sheets in a row,” Smith said, backing his old side to get promoted.
Who Leeds United face before the March international break.
Leeds and Sheffield United have three more games to play before the March international break while Burnley still have four to play – with Burnley going to Cardiff City on Tuesday after playing in The FA Cup.
Leeds start the run of three games in the space of six days with a trip to Fratton Park on Sunday. A game where Leeds look to rid themselves of their lunchtime hoodoo, before hosting Millwall next Wednesday.
Then, it is a trip to QPR – a fixture that saw Leeds lose 4-0 last season. Three potential banana skins are on the way but a couple of wins will install confidence ahead of the break before Swansea on the 29th.
