The difficult choice that 58% of Sunderland fans want Regis Le Bris to make regarding Sunderland’s starting lineup against Watford

The Black Cats head into the weekend off the back of a 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough last time out, and they currently occupy an automatic promotion spot after recording five victories in six league outings. Their most recent success at the Stadium of Light came with a center-back pairing comprised of Black Cats stalwart Luke O’Nien and loanee debutant Chris Mepham, with the latter in particular catching the eye during an assured display. Sunderland supporters have sent a strong message to head coach Regis Le Bris regarding his defensive team selection ahead of Saturday’s Championship match against Watford.

typical first-choice selectionDespite his popularity among the fan base, it seemed that most would prefer that Dan Ballard start the game on the bench after suffering a minor injury against Plymouth Argyle that kept him from exercising for a full week before Middlesbrough’s arrival.

 

The three central defense pairings that Sunderland supporters would most want to see starting against Watford on Saturday afternoon were O’Nien and Mepham, O’Nien and Ballard, and Mepham and Ballard. The poll has been running all week on The Echo. With O’Nien and Mepham receiving 58% of the vote, the majority of participants indicated that they would prefer to see Le Bris name an unaltered pairing.

With 29% of the vote, the unproven combination of Ballard and Mepham was the next most popular choice. O’Nien and Ballard, a duo that has recently performed well for Sunderland, received only 13% of the vote.
