‘He can manage better’ – Carlos Corberan praises new West Brom talent’s progress amid limited minutes

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has praised Ousmane Diakite’s improvement despite his limited appearances since signing.

West Brom have made a strong start to the Championship season, leading after six games. This year, the Baggies have only dropped points once, drawing 0-0 with Leeds United.

After losing in the play-offs to eventual winners Southampton last year, manager Carlos Corberan will be pleased with his team’s start this year.

The summer saw 11 new additions, including defensive midfielder Ousmane Diakite. Diakite has only played 38 minutes of Championship football since arriving.

Corberan, the West Brom manager, holds high admiration for this player.

According to the Spaniard, the youthful midfielder’s game is improving as he learns his trade, as reported by Birmingham Mail. He said:

“Diakite, for me, is a player who still needs to develop habits – but I’ve seen an improvement and favourable adaption from his first training session to now.

“Probably during the international break, the fact that he wasn’t here didn’t help him maintain this adaption, but at the same time, being called by their countries is something beneficial.

“But, day by day, I watch him becoming more accustomed to playing. I saw some positive things the other day, game scenarios he handled well versus Plymouth, as well as ones he could have handled better.”

A way in?

West Brom will face Sheffield Wednesday this weekend, and midfielder Alex Mowatt is a concern due to an injury. That could lead Diakite to seek out more action.

While they are distinct players, Diakite has his own unique attributes that might replace Mowatt’s technical abilities and make him a valuable addition to the midfield.

Diakite, who replaced Uros Racic on the bench against Plymouth, may start alongside him in midfield this season. Jayson Molumby may be available for selection after missing the Argyle game.

Is this Albion’s year?

West Brom have struggled in the Championship since their 2021 relegation.

They made the play-offs for the first time since relegation last season, after narrowly missing out the previous two.

However, this year appears to be a fantastic opportunity to finally secure promotion. Corberan is one of the division’s most regarded coaches, and retaining his services is critical to their success.

The Baggies will benefit greatly from striker Josh Maja returning to form. Maja has not lived up to expectations since leaving Sunderland, but with six goals this season, he appears to be a key contributor.
