Shortly after halftime, George Hirst headed through a sea of men and into the net after taking advantage of some sloppy marking from a corner, giving the Reds the lead.
After bringing on Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliott Anderson from the bench, Forest rallied, and Ryan Yates headed home a wonderful cross from Anthony Elanga to give the Reds the lead.
The scoring stopped there. Jack Taylor missed to send the Reds to the competition’s last eight after Forest scored all five of their attempts after Yates’ second attempt was disallowed for offside.

Nottingham Forest red card might have been missed during FA Cup win
When it comes to VAR, Forest is due some luck. In fact, if the Reds are to even out the PGMOL’s decisions from the previous season, there may be more to come in the coming weeks. Toward the end of the first half of extra time, Yates was given a yellow card for a good break of a promising attack, and on another night, he might have been sent off. Later in extra time, Sky Sports reporter Sam Blitz noticed an incident that could have resulted in referee Tony Harrington issuing another yellow card for the Forest captain.
He said: “Yates is lucky to still be on. The Forest captain leans an elbow into Morsy and already on a booking, he’s fortunate not to be handed his marching orders after Tony Harrington blew up for a foul.”
Ryan Yates stats vs Ipswich
It must be acknowledged that Yates’ performance was generally favorable. The captain performed admirably and discovered some excellent pockets of space when Gibbs-White was brought on board.
On the strength of this, Yates will be looking to position himself to play more frequently in the Premier League. He’s not been considered a regular of late and this showing might have given Nuno Espirito Santo some food for thought.
The player is very much Mr Nottingham Forest. He’s the last man standing from the team that won promotion to the Premier League and he very much has a role to play in the squad.
Given that he has other midfielders at his disposal and that players like Elliot Anderson and Nicolas Dominguez have been playing well lately, Espirito Santo will likely have to wait a little while to find a spot for him in the squad. However, it appears that Yates is willing to fight for his shirt back in the top flight.
