Max Kilman was sold by Wolves to West Ham in the summer, but the club thereafter made several dubious decisions.
Kilman’s transfer to West Ham netted Wolves £40 million, and the club had plenty of time to recruit a replacement. Gary O’Neil had a hole in his defense after the Wanderers captain left, and the only players available to replace it were Toti Gomes, Craig Dawson, Santi Bueno, and Yorson Mosquera. After a bright start, Mosquera sustained MCL and ACL injuries in the loss to Aston Villa. With Toti returning to training before Liverpool, there are now just three alternatives available at center defense.
Wolves were content to go past the transfer window without adding to their defense despite the defense’s problems since Kilman joined the Hammers.

He believed Wolves were good to start the season with their present alternatives, especially the Colombian, who they intend to develop into the next great thing, especially with Mosquera joining the team following a fruitful loan at Villarreal. Hobbs clarified to the Telegraph, saying, “On the outside, some supporters would think we’ve undervalued ourselves. Actually, everything is going exactly according to our summertime plan.We won’t carry five center backs when we play four at the back. A club our level would never do.
“We had great expectations for Yerson, and it would have been difficult to maintain a happy fifth senior center-back.” When Yerson entered and Max left, we were rather happy with how things appeared.You could argue that we didn’t replace Max based on the goals we’ve given up this season, but we had a bad finish to the previous one [with Kilman starting every game].Max wasn’t at blame for that, any more than Yerson was this season.Hobbs also disclosed that Wolves would have loaned out Santi Bueno for regular football play if they had signed another center-back. “Santiago Bueno would have gone out on loan for regular football, even if we’d signed another one and we were looking,” he continued.
