Blackburn Rovers boss confirms huge injury blow in three-man update ahead of Leeds United clash
John Eustace, the manager of Blackburn Rovers, has announced that he would be missing three players for Saturday’s Championship matchup against Leeds United.
Leeds, led by Daniel Farke, will visit Ewood Park on Saturday afternoon in an attempt to win three straight games in less than a week. After a much less comfortable 4-3 victory at Swansea City on Sunday, Wednesday’s commanding 3-0 victory at home against Luton Town is likely to more closely mirror their previous away performance this weekend.
Despite dropping out of the play-off spots in recent weeks, Rovers had won two straight games since the international break in November, including a convincing 1-0 victory over promotion-hopeful Middlesbrough at Riverside Stadium. However, Andreas Weimann, the co-top scorer, was unexpectedly absent from
“Andi will be missing for a couple of weeks, unfortunately,” Eustace told the Lancashire Telegraph. “He’s been playing through a knee injury which people didn’t know about. He’s had that for four games and yesterday it swelled up a bit in training. We have decided there is no point risking it. We want to get him right so he’s going to have a few weeks off.”
Forward Arnor Sigurdsson was hoped to return from a thigh injury after the international break but picked up a separate calf issue in training. He was pencilled in to possibly come back against Leeds but remains unavailable, as does goalkeeper Balazs Toth.
“Anor won’t be available (for Leeds), he’s going to be another couple of weeks,” the Rovers boss added. “Unfortunately, he’s going to be a bit longer than we’d initially hoped. He came back to training last Monday and he’s broken down again and will be a little bit longer. Balasz got a kick on international break, he has sprained his ankle quite badly. He will be missing for at least another two weeks as well.”
Despite having three first-team regulars at risk of suspension, Blackburn was able to avoid more selection problems during their closely contested victory at Middlesbrough. Before that trip to the Riverside, Lewis Travis, Todd Cantwell, and Hayden Carter had all received four yellow cards, escaping a fifth and ensuing one-game suspension.
Wilfried Gnonto and Joe Rodon of Leeds also avoided receiving their fifth yellow card in Wednesday’s victory over Luton; Sam Byram was the other little worry that night. The full-back was substituted halfway through the second half when Farke disclosed a minor hamstring strain.
“Sam had a minor issue with his hamstring,” the Leeds manager stated. “I hope he sensed it in time. We will have to wait for the evaluation.
