COMFIRMED DEAL: Sunderland accepted to appoint formal Liverpool star as headcoach next summer

This season, a former Sunderland player is on fire and could perhaps return to haunt the Black Cats.

Regis Le Bris, who joined Sunderland in the summer, has adapted to life at the Stadium of Light rather fast.

When he arrived and started his first Championship game last season, there was a sense of uncertainty.

However, the Black Cats’ commanding 2-0 victory over Cardiff City put them up for an incredibly successful start to the new campaign, as Sunderland is now ranked second in the Championship.

In the league, Sunderland has won five games and lost one, while West Brom has won five and drawn one.

The two best teams in the Championship thus far this year are Sunderland and the Baggies; however, their first meeting is not until the end of November, and it will take place on Wearside.

Josh Maja is playing incredibly well for West Brom this year.

Josh Maja, a former player for Sunderland, is leading the charge for West Brom and is presently top of the Championship scoring tally.

The former member of the Black Cats academy departed the team during the 2018–19 campaign to join Bordeaux, where he stayed for four and a half years until being let go the previous year.

Before Bordeaux signed Maja in January 2019, he had made 24 League One appearances for Sunderland and scored 15 goals.

The Nigerian international only made 12 appearances and scored one goal in the Championship during his debut season with the Baggies due to injury.

Maja has made six appearances this season and scored six goals. Maja’s manager at Plymouth, Wayne Rooney, described him as an interesting player who is challenging to prepare for after Maja scored the game-winning goal against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday.

We knew that he would slip in and assume a fake nine position.

“At times, I thought we handled him okay, but when a player is confident in his ability to score goals, he seems to always find that one moment when he can make the difference.

“I felt like we handled him pretty effectively at times, but he makes the play that ends up winning the game.

“He’s a talented player, and West Brom is a solid team with a wealth of experience and results-driven mentality.”

Josh Maja might be key in the Sunderland and West Brom championship battle.

As of right now, Sunderland and West Brom are the two teams vying for the championship. Though teams might falter and reappear during a season this long.

However, if Sunderland and West Brom continue to play like today, their match will down to the wire, and Maja may have the last say.

Rooney, a legendary striker in the Premier League, is praising him for his excellent play. He will definitely want to beat his former team when Sunderland and West Brom play in November.

When Maja left Sunderland in 2019, the supporters’ reactions were conflicted. However, there’s no denying that he looks great this season.
