What yellow and red cards in next 2 Newcastle United matches would mean for Cup final
I have seen and heard a lot of debate about yellow cards and red cards ahead of the Carabao Cup final, Newcastle United with two other matches to navigate before Wembley.
Brighton at home this afternoon, then West Ham on Monday 10 March.
So what is the case with yellow and red cards in these next two NUFC matches.
How would they potentially impact on availability for Wembley?
Can Newcastle United players be suspended for the Carabao Cup final?
If a Newcastle player gets a yellow card today against Brighton:
If a player is shown two yellow cards throughout and FA Cup campaign (or Carabao Cup one), they will serve a suspension during the next match in the competition. The slate is wiped clean in both competitions after the quarter-final stage.
So a yellow card in the FA Cup today would be irrelevant for the Carabao Cup final.
However, if Dan Burn, Will Osula, or Joe Willock, got booked against Brighton, as they already have one yellow each (all booked at Birmingham) then another yellow today for any of the three would see them mis the FA Cup quarter-final if they got through.
If a Newcastle player gets a yellow card against West Ham on Monday 10 March:
Premier League yellow cards (unless two in the same match that lead to a red card) also only apply to that competition. You get a two match ban if you reach 10 PL bookings up to and including the 32nd match of the Premier League season.
So with five PL matches to be played before Newcastle United complete 32 PL games, those at risk of bans are Joelinton who is on nine and Dan Burn on seven. So if Joelinton got booked against West Ham, he would miss the next two PL matches against Brentford and Leicester, but it wouldn’t impact the Carabao Cup final.
If a Newcastle player gets a red card today against Brighton:
If a red card is given in any domestic match in the Premier League and two Cups, it then applies to all three domestic competitions.
So a red card today could see a Newcastle United player miss the Carabao Cup final.
It depends on why the red card is given, whether they would just miss the West Ham match in the Premier League, or the ban extend to the Carabao Cup final and potentially beyond.
Two yellow cards in the Brighton game leading to a red – One match ban.
A red card for denying a Brighton goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity – One match ban.
A red card against Brighton for dissent – Two match ban.
A red card against Brighton for violent conduct or serious foul play – Three match ban.
If a Newcastle player gets a red card against West Ham on Monday 10 March:
A red card against West Ham for any type of offending would mean the Newcastle United player would miss the next game, the Carabao Cup final. Potentially of course, missing other matches as well in the Premier League.
Back in 2023
If you remember, the rules worked both for and against Newcastle United ahead of the 2023 Carabao Cup final against Man U.
Nick Pope got sent off against Liverpool in the Premier League and picked up a one match ban, so he missed that final against Man U as it was the next game.
Bruno Guimaraes got sent off in the semi-final second leg against Southampton BUT served his three match ban in the Premier League, as those games came before the Carabao Cup final.
