Rick Astley brings his new autobiography to The Bridgewater Hall

Rick Astley is set to publish his hotly-anticipated autobiography next month – and there’s a chance to hear direct from the much-loved pop icon at a very special book event.

On Monday, October 7, Astley, who was born in Newton-le-Willows, will be ‘in conversation’ with DJ, journalist, and writer Dave Haslam

about Never at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

The unforgettable evening is hosted by Chorley-based indie bookshop ebb & flo, and each ticket holder will get a special independent

bookshop version of the book.

Rick Astley, born in nearby Newton-le-Willows, rose to prominence in the 1980s as a member of music giant Stock Aitken Waterman’s

stable of performers, earning a big number one success with Never Gonna Give You Up in 1987, catapulting the unassuming 21-year-old into the pop stratosphere.

From platinum-selling albums to worldwide tours, the world was at his feet. And then, abruptly, at what appeared to be the pinnacle of success, it was not.

At the age of 27, Astley retired from the career that had brought him so much success and financial comfort. Behind the songs and glitz was a young guy coming to terms with his newfound popularity, the realities of life in the pop music business, and the responsibilities of touring, not to mention reconciling with his boyhood spent in a turbulent family dynamic with his divorced parents.

Time away from the industry allowed him to ponder and seek therapy, unwittingly laying the groundwork for his triumphant return to music.
Never is an intimate look at the guy behind the classics, combining nostalgia, new ideas, and introspection with a healthy dosage of northern humour.

The event at The Bridgewater Hall will include Astley on stage ‘in conversation’ with writer Dave Haslam, followed by an audience Q&A in which ticketholders can ask questions.

It is organised by ebb & flo bookshop, a tiny and friendly little bookshop in Chorley, Lancashire.

Diane Gunning of ebb & flo says, “We’re excited to host Rick’s first book event for his long-awaited autobiography.

“Rick is a significant and well-known person in British music history, with an intriguing story to tell, but he is also a lovely down-to-earth Lancashire bloke. I assure it will be a fantastic and memorable evening at Manchester’s magnificent Bridgewater Hall.”

Tickets costing £44.25 include an exclusive hardback copy with a digitally autographed edge and can be bought at www.bridgewater-hall.co.uk/whats-on/rick-astley-book-launch-071024/.
