I woke up in refugee camp 48 hours after swapping shirts with Eric Cantona – two years later I signed for Celtic

NEW Two Super League players, in the opinion of St Helens assistant coach Lee Briers, would “kill it” in the NRL.

The fact that those two players are Wigan Warriors teammates Jai Field and Bevan French—two of the league’s most intriguing players ever since they left the NRL—may not come as much of a surprise.

After outstanding seasons for the Warriors thus far, Field and French are anticipated to be in the running for the 2024 Steve Prescott Man of Steel.

However, Briers, the new assistant for the Saints, feels that Australian clubs are “mental” for not considering Field or French. Briers most recently played for the Brisbane Broncos for two seasons in the NRL.

They would murder it. “I find it unbelievable that they are not in the NRL,” Briers stated on the Sky Sports podcast, The Bench.

Though they are in the Super League and are a bright light there, I wouldn’t want them to go.

“But if people in Australia believe that Jai Field and Bevan French won’t make it, they’re insane.”

“I watch every game back home in Australia, and when Bevan French runs, it seems like he’s moving at a quick pace.

“That left-foot kick he scored against Hull KR the other day, he manages to get around somehow.”

“The people were having difficulties since the communists had left the country in such a terrible shape. You were unable to develop. All I wanted was a normal existence, nothing extraordinary.

“The communists knew their time was coming, but I wasn’t going to wait for that night in France to leave Albania. I changed jerseys with Eric Cantona 48 hours after playing on the Parc Des Princes against all those renowned names, like Deschamps, Cantona, and Laurent Blanc. The next thing I knew, I woke up in a camp for refugees where you were treated the same as everyone else.

“There is no particular treatment for you. You receive identical meals and beds. All parties are subject to the same set of rules and regulations. Even though I was living in a camp for refugees, I still had to strive to lead a professional football player’s life. I gave it my all; in sports, physical preparedness is crucial, but when you have an optimistic outlook, there’s no way I could have imagined not succeeding. Even though it was obvious that I was thousands of miles from success, I had a deep-seated conviction that, with enough effort, commitment, and determination, I would succeed and that the right opportunity would present itself.
