Sunderland get back on the winning trail in gritty fashion

Sunderland headed into this Friday night meeting on the heels of a painful setback at the hands of Leeds United and a meek home loss to Hull City, experiencing a mini-slump in form and with our automatic promotion aspirations hanging by the barest of threads.

With that in mind, and the battle for the playoffs raging fiercely beneath us, securing a victory over Sheffield Wednesday on a rutted Hillsborough surface was paramount, and despite one or two lairy moments in the first half and the concession of another cheap goal when Callum Paterson headed home after a defensive mix up, we got the job done with efficiency, two well-worked goals, and a touch of steel in the latter stages..

Régis Le Bris shuffled his pack for this game (justifiably so after several players appeared jaded against the Tigers) and his selections were vindicated as Alan Browne, Leo Hjelde, and Eliezer Mayenda all contributed to a key victory. Despite needing snookers and an extended run of wins to have a realistic chance of the top two, we upheld our end of the bargain.
