Reading boss holding nerve on ‘pushing the button’ as free agent option remains open

Reading boss Noel Hunt has confirmed that they have looked at up to six names as they weigh up bringing in an extra player for the League One run-in.

Dean Bouzanis left the Royals during the winter window after his contract was amicably ended, leaving one spot open.

With 14 games remaining, including tomorrow’s trip to Wigan Athletic, the Royals are only three points shy of the play-offs, sitting ninth.

Hunt has stated that the EFL has given the club permission to bring in a new face, although with tight conditions, and it is now up to when they ‘press the button.’

With a tiny and youthful squad, Hunt understands that one injury might be critical, so the challenge now is to locate the ideal area to strengthen ahead of the season’s final nine weeks.

“We’re looking at a few men because we have a limited group. We have a busy two weeks ahead of us, with five games scheduled. There are nine weeks remaining and fourteen games to play. It is critical that we place a player in a position of interest in terms of our current situation and resources. We’re one injury away from having a minor problem. Everyone will play in the team that we have, and if we can get one in to help us out, that would be fantastic.

“First and foremost, we want the appropriate character. We’ve talked in depth about four, five, and six players, but we’ll keep them because injuries require it. It is critical that we get it to Saturday, and if we need to press the button, we will.”

Hunt reiterated that he is prepared to press the trigger whenever it is judged necessary, with Reading facing three matches in the next eight days.
