The Sunderland striker has been discussing his choice to join the Black Cats.

Sunderland’s summer signing Ahmed Abdullahi cited his affection for ex-Black Cats striker Jermain Defoe as a crucial motivation in his decision to join Wearside last month.

The Nigerian player moved to the Stadium of Light from KAA Gent on deadline day. He is yet to play for Regis Le Bris’ team as he recovers from a groin injury. Despite his lack of senior experience, the 20-year-old was a productive member of Gent’s junior team last season, netting 21 goals in 38 U21 outings.

When Sunderland offered to take Abdullahi away from the Belgian team, he accepted the offer without hesitation, having an unexpected influence on his choice.

During an interview with the Black Cats’ in-house media staff, he expressed satisfaction with his adjustment to life in England. I’m quite thrilled to be here. The supporters, and the way I perceive the club now, are great. I enjoy the club.

“When I was a youngster, I used to watch English football, and I believe Sunderland was in the Premier League at the time. I was watching. When playing PlayStation at home, I always choose Sunderland since they only have one striker (Jermain Defoe). I was always him, which is why I adored this club back then. And when they informed me Sunderland wanted to sign me, I was ecstatic. “I’m so glad to be here.”

Adullahi also voiced unhappiness with the ailment that is presently keeping him out, but he is anxious to make his debut for his new team. He continued, “I’m quite excited. Eleven weeks is quite challenging. It is too lengthy. “I can’t wait to return to the pitch.”

Sunderland head coach Le Bris explained the forward’s expected absence immediately after his arrival: “Ahmed is unusual because he will have surgery. He will most likely be out for 10 to twelve weeks. It wasn’t really obvious when we signed him. We need an expert to determine exactly what the issue was. Now we know. The diagnosis is straightforward, and it will be resolved following this procedure. He had been experiencing discomfort and tightness in his groin for quite some time. It was not very obvious, but now I believe it will be resolved.”
