Explosions Heard as 50 Firefighters Tackle Blaze in Rotherham
A major fire broke out at an industrial site in Rotherham on Saturday, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering multiple explosions. Around 50 firefighters were deployed to tackle the intense blaze, which authorities described as a “significant incident.”
The fire started at an industrial facility on Steel Street, near the Holmes level crossing, at approximately 11:00 AM GMT. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of large flames and loud explosions. Residents in the area reported hearing a series of blasts as the fire engulfed the site, fueling concerns about hazardous materials.
South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue (SYFR) confirmed that eight fire engines were dispatched to contain the inferno. A spokesperson for the fire service stated, “Crews are working tirelessly to bring the fire under control. The safety of the public and our firefighters remains our top priority.”
Witnesses described hearing loud bangs, believed to be caused by pressurized materials inside the facility igniting due to the heat. “I was in my house when I heard a huge explosion. The whole building shook,” said one local resident. “Then I saw massive flames and black smoke rising into the air.”
As a result of the fire, large amounts of thick smoke spread across the area, leading authorities to issue a public safety warning. Residents were advised to keep their windows and doors closed to avoid inhaling potentially harmful fumes.
Police and ambulance services also attended the scene to assist with the operation. A safety cordon was established around the area to keep people away from the danger zone. Nearby businesses and homes were evacuated as a precaution while firefighters battled the flames.
A spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Police stated, “We are working closely with the fire service to manage the situation. We urge the public to avoid the area and follow safety advice.”
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown. Fire investigators are expected to examine the site once it is deemed safe. Officials will determine whether the fire was accidental or if further investigations are needed.
SYFR has assured the public that firefighters will remain at the site until the situation is fully under control. “Crews are making good progress, but it will take some time before we can declare the area completely safe,” a fire service representative said.
The fire caused significant disruption, with road closures and delays reported in surrounding areas. Train services near Holmes level crossing were also impacted due to smoke reducing visibility.
