Recognition for West Brom’s most important cog in the machine

Recognition for West Brom’s most important cog in the machine.

One of West Bromwich Albion’s best players of the year, Alex Mowatt has earned a spot in the Sky Bet Championship Team of the Week for the second week running.

While the defenders kept another clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Plymouth, Josh Maja has rightfully been taking centre stage for

his goals. But, Alex Mowatt is quietly getting everything done for his team in between.

The 29-year-old midfielder received a 7.9/10 rating from WhoScored.com after covering every blade of grass against the Pilgrims and

playing equally in attack and defence to assist the Baggies keep a clean sheet for the third straight game and win four in a row.

Mowatt can do everything you would want from a midfielder and more and has scored two goals himself this season, both incredible

strikes, including a free kick against Portsmouth, already equalling his tally from the whole of last season in only his fifth game, while

he was unlucky to see an effort hit the post and bounce away against Plymouth on Saturday with a trade mark long range strike.

One of the most important pieces of business this season was tying him down to a new contract in the summer.

Many Albion fans were resigned to losing Cedric Kipre at the back and would have been fearful of losing Mowatt too the longer it dragged on.

But he was more than happy to commit to the club, alongside Kyle Bartley, and has really bought into what the boss Carlos Corberan is trying to achieve here.

His left foot balance means he slots seamlessly into a midfield alongside whoever it may be, usually John Swift and Jayson Molumby and he would be a player that would be a natural in the Premier League were he to get them there.

He talked throughout the preseason about picking himself back up after the heartbreak of the play-off semifinal. He and his teammates have come out firing, winning five games in a row and drawing fairly with Leeds. The Albion is attracting the envy of many high-spending teams, especially in light of the club’s recent turnaround and departures.

Mowatt is unquestionably one of, if not the most crucial, cogs in Carlos Corberan’s machine, but the team is made up of many unsung heroes. By 2025, expect to see him on a lot more teams of the week and perhaps even a team of the season.
