Why Leeds United might soon benefit from a potential Everton takeover and earn a £11 million fee.
Everton and Leeds United have had a bit of a rivalry in recent years, but the new takeover at Goodison Park might benefit Leeds.
A rivalry has evolved between Everton and Leeds United, whether it’s due to relegation in the Premier League, Everton’s pursuit of Wilfried Gnonto, or the Toffees being penalized points for breaching the rules during a season in which Leeds were eliminated.
Everton appear to be heading for another relegation struggle in 2024-25 following a terrible start to the season. Sean Dyche, Goodison Park’s manager, is under mounting pressure.
Everton supporters have had a difficult time. In a matter of years, they went from being European contenders to relegation prospects. However, Everton supporters received some very good news this week.
According to the BBC, Everton is poised to be acquired by The Friedkin Group, which also owns Italian club Roma. That takeover might help Leeds earn a fee of almost £11 million.
Leeds may now have the opportunity to finally sell Jack Harrison.
Harrison was one of eight players that used Victor Orta’s loan release clause in 2023. Since then, four of the eight have departed permanently: Robin Koch, Marc Roca, Diego Llorente, and Luis Sinisterra.
Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober returned to Elland Road, while Harrison and Rasmus Kristensen were offered another loan. Both took advantage of the chance, with Harrison returning to Everton on loan.
Leeds, on the other hand, now have the opportunity to unload the winger following Everton’s acquisition. According to the YEP, Leeds are expected to regain a significant portion of the £11 million they paid Manchester City to re-sign him in summer 2021.
Do Everton really want to buy Harrison from Leeds?
While Everton may now have the funds to sign Harrison and convert his loan into a permanent contract, would they want to? Everton’s record this season suggests they may choose to seek elsewhere.
Season in Premier League | Club | Apps | Goals | Assists |
2020-21 | Leeds | 36 | 8 | 8 |
2021-22 | Leeds | 35 | 8 | 1 |
2022-23 | Leeds | 36 | 5 | 7 |
2023-24 | Everton | 29 | 3 | 3 |
2024-25 (so far) | Everton | 5 | 0 | 0 |
Last season, Harrison had his poorest Premier League season in terms of statistics. In the Premier League, just six goals were scored, compared to 16 in the first season, nine in the second, and 12 in the following season.
He has yet to score or assist in England’s top division this season, and he has not done so since a 2-2 draw with Spurs in February of last season. Everton can now afford Harrison, but they may not want him.
