Norwich City: Darren Eadie on city transfer saga

After submitting a transfer request less than two weeks prior, Kamara’s summer of rumors and dissatisfaction came to an end when he signed with the Tigers in the latter half of the transfer deadline day.

Eadie feels that choice was the wrong one for him and that it was inconsistent with the person he knew as a prospective City academy student.

“One of the events that unfolded towards the end of the window that I did just find a little surprising was Abu Kamara’s desire to leave Norwich having just returned to the club following an impressive spell on loan with Portsmouth last season,” he stated.

“I’ve known Abu since he was a student at Langley School, and I’ve always thought he was a modest, quiet guy. So I’m very confident there was some outside influence behind his audacious choice to submit a transfer request.

“Although I understand his desire to play regular first-team football, I think he left Norwich a little too quickly and I hope it’s not a move he regrets.

Young players want to play for the first team as soon as possible in their careers, which I suppose is a reflection of the times we play in. Though I understand that several of my teammates benefited from successful loan periods thirty years ago, I can never remember anyone coming back to the squad and practically demanding first-team involvement.

“I just wonder if Abu might have been better served to have given it until January to see what opportunities came his way here at Norwich before making the decision to jump ship.”

However, the 49-year-old maintains that Norwich handled Kamara’s request appropriately and that football teams do not have space for players who are on the verge of leaving.

“Although it is always disappointing to see talented players go, it’s a necessary aspect of the game,” he added in the matchday program for the Canaries. “It is my opinion that the club’s only responsibility is to get the best deal for a player who wishes to go and let them move on.

“On that front, I think it must be acknowledged that our sporting director Ben Knapper has worked impressively to obtain very generous fees for the players who felt their futures were better served elsewhere.”
