Arne Engels recounts rise to prominence amid exciting Germany return with Celtic next week

Arne Engels has had a whirlwind 18 months, transforming from a little-known youth in his birthplace to a key figure in the Champions League.

In January 2023, he joined Augsburg from Club NXT, the junior wing of Club Brugge. He made over 50 appearances for the Bundesliga club before moving to Glasgow for a record fee of £11 million this summer.

In just four games at Celtic, Engels has already contributed two goals and two assists, proving to be a valuable addition to Brendan Rodgers’ team.

With each passing appearance, the 21-year-old is emerging as a top-tier option, and his great performances have extended the club’s talent pipeline.

Engels, who will return to Germany with Celtic next week to face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League, has spoken about his rise to notoriety and how an early introduction at Signal Iduna Park catapulted him to stardom.

Arne Engels plans to return to Germany with Celtic.

Engels shared his experience playing at Signal Iduna Park in January 2023, when he assisted in a 4-3 defeat against Borussia Dortmund. The game included players such as Jude Bellingham, Matt Hummels, and Donyell Malen.

He said, “It was wild, but it brought the best out of me. Augsburg had already spent a lengthy period in the Bundesliga. They were in the center of the table or slightly below. So, obviously, Dortmund was anticipated to win handily, but that was not the case. It was a good game.

“The result was a 4-3 loss. Every time: 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3. It was fantastic to play in. I also got an assist. “It was the perfect night for me.”

Engels will be hoping for a measurable outcome next week, even if Celtic face a hard task against last year’s Champions League finalists.

Arne Engels has solidified his spot in the starting lineup.

Because of his transfer cost, you’d expect Engels to start right away, but that’s easier said than done given the battle for spots in Rodgers’ engine room.

In any case, Celtic are in possession of an interesting talent. In addition to his club success, the 21-year-old has made his debut for the Belgian national team during the most recent international break.

In perspective, that is quite an accomplishment for someone practicing their trade in Scotland. It also reflects the Bhoys’ desire to attract players capable of making an impact at the highest level while wearing green and white.

This is only the beginning for Engels at Celtic. Hopefully, he can continue to progress at his present rate under Rodgers’ leadership.
