“Both me and club agreed” – Player opens up on summer Celtic exit, believes he’s ‘at the top’

Celtic’s Gustaf Lagerbielke revealed to Fotbolldirekt that Brendan Rodgers decided to move him out on loan in the summer.

Celtic’s Gustaf Lagerbielke revealed to Fotbolldirekt that Brendan Rodgers decided to move him out on loan in the summer.

The defender joins Celtic from IF Elfsborg in August 2023, having played just over 400 minutes in seven league games last season.

He had the possibility to go out on loan in the winter market, but Celtic were not interested. SC Heerenveen, KV Mechelen, and Lecce all wanted to sign the 24-year-old in the summer. He then joined FC Twente on loan.

After leaving Celtic on loan, he stated, “I didn’t get much playing time at Celtic and both me and the club agreed that a loan would be very beneficial for both parties.”

“Then I analysed my choices, which included clubs in a variety of nations. I weighed the advantages and disadvantages of each and spoke with representatives from other clubs. After the meeting with Twente, it felt like a good’match’, so that’s what we proceeded with.”

The Celtic-owned player’s decision to join Twente has not paid off yet. That’s because the Swedish international has yet to make his Eredivisie debut. He is unconcerned about this and is optimistic of appearing regularly this season.

“I don’t worry about it. The first period has only been about integrating into the team and learning a little bit. Lagerbielke noted that because everything is in Dutch, there may be a greater gap.

“Then I cleaned up the flat and attempted to move in. It’s felt great in training as well, and it feels like it’s just a matter of time before I get to play, which I’m looking forward to.”

Prior to joining Celtic, the centre-back played in Sweden. Fotbolldirekt questioned him, “Where would you say you are in your career now?”

He responded: “That’s a good question.” So far, I believe I am on top. That’s how I feel about my own abilities, both physically, tactically, technically, mentally, and elsewhere. I am in a great mood right now.

“In terms of football, I feel like I’m at the highest level that I’ve been at in my life, then I just hope to show that on the pitch soon as well.”

Lagerbielke’s deal with Brendan Rodgers’ team runs until 2028.
