‘Had a lot of rubbish to deal’ – David Moyes explains plan behind Everton training camp in UAE
The Blues manager is seeking to make the most of the break until Everton’s next game by bringing the squad away to recover bodies and minds after an extraordinary run of form
David Moyes believes his players deserve the opportunity to integrate away from the spotlight after turning Everton’s season around in a matter of weeks.
The Blues manager took over a team hovering precariously close to the relegation zone last month.
They are now 15 points from trouble after embarking on a seven-game unbeaten stretch that continued when Jake O’Brien’s late header sealed a valuable 1-1 draw at Brentford.
It was a crucial point that could have been more had Beto displayed the ruthlessness that led him to five goals in four league games before the voyage to west London.
Instead, the 27-year-old was unable to defeat Bees custodian Mark Flekken on any of three occasions he was sent through on goal.
Those errors meant David Moyes and his players departed the capital with a tinge of disappointment.
But with 10 days until their next game – away to Wolves on Saturday, March 8 (8pm kick-off) – and expectations a calm March will see a number of important players return from long-term injury, there will also be gratification as the squad travels to the United Arab Emirates for a warm weather training exercise.
For Moyes, the ambition is for a trip that will enable him to work with his players in a more informal setting and away from the pressure they have endured through a busy set of fixtures that, at first, were played against a backdrop of real fears over a survival fight and which, more recently, included emotional draws with Liverpool and Manchester United.
He said: “We’re going to train abroad for a few days now. I think, not so much me, but I believe the players at Everton have worked really hard and had a lot of nonsense to cope with.
“So I’m going to go and try and train with them and have a few days in the sun if we can.”
