Chris Mepham on Bournemouth contract & Sunderland future.

Despite doubts about his long-term future, Chris Mepham maintains he isn’t looking too far ahead, saying his only

priority at the moment is staying in the Sunderland team and supporting the Black Cats as they continue to build on

their explosive start to the Championship season.

On deadline day, the Wales international, whose contract with Bournemouth expires in the summer of next year,

signed a season-long loan to Sunderland.

Mepham, 26, made an amazing debut this past weekend against Middlesbrough, but it’s too soon to say if

Sunderland would want to extend the loan arrangement for the following season.

Nevertheless, Mepham says he is focused only on the current difficulties that lie ahead on Wearside and isn’t

allowing his thoughts to stray into the future.

“This is my final year (at Bournemouth) and I think the club have the option of next year,” he stated.
“As I previously stated, I believe that playing football and receiving regular game time—something I’ve perhaps missed over the past several years—are the most essential things for me at this point in my career.

“I believe that for me, getting game time, staying healthy, and avoiding injuries are the most important things. Everything else will take care of itself.”

“Of course, the most important thing is helping the team and trying to do as best I can for the football club.”

Last season, Mepham was put in a strange situation. After spending £12 million to join Bournemouth from Brentford five years prior, he had been a regular for the team, but he was benched last season and only made 10 Premier League appearances.

“It’s super, super tough not playing,” he said.

Once more, there are some boys who may not be as impacted. While they may be content to sit on their contracts, I don’t believe I have ever been that way. I’ve never wanted to accept my current situation, watch the season out from the bench, and call it a day.

“Playing football with the team makes me the happiest and most contented person I’ve ever been, and it seems like all your problems kind of go away.”
