Bristol Rovers rivals eye ex-Newcastle United man as Birmingham plot shock raid on Championship rival

A round-up of key headlines from League One – including updates from Wrexham and Birmingham City

Bristol Rovers will look to bounce back from their away defeats to Northampton and Wycombe when they return to the Memorial Stadium to lock horns with fellow relegation strugglers Rotherham United.

The Pirates have picked up over 70 percent of their points this season in front of their own supporters and will be desperate to treat their fans to yet another memorable victory against The Millers, who have fallen to defeat in four of their last five games, in what has been a hugely challenging return to the New York Stadium for Steve Evans.

Bristol Rovers are winless in two league games against Rotherham and will hope that they can put that record right on Saturday as they look to build a health gap between themselves and the drop zone.

As attention turns to an intriguing weekend of League One action, Bristol World takes a look at the main transfer headlines around the division.

League One promotion hopefuls Wrexham are reportedly planning a swoop for former Newcastle United and Burnley central midfielder Jeff Hendrick.

The Wrexham Insider understands the Red Dragons have identified the Republic of Ireland international as a potential replacement for the injured Andy Cannon, who recently sustained a knee injury. Hendrick has been without a club since leaving Newcastle in June but has the potential to offer Wrexham some much needed experience at a vital stage of the season for the Welsh side. In total, he has played 262 Championship games and 147 in the top-flight while also representing the Republic of Ireland 79 times.

Phil Parkinson’s side are third in the league and dreaming of a third consecutive promotion after making a great impact in England’s third-tier this term.

League One pacesetters Birmingham City are believed to be planning an ambitious summer move for soon-to-be out-of-contract West Brom midfielder John Swift, according to reports from Birmingham World.

The former Reading and Brentford playmaker, who has played over 100 games for the Baggies since 2022, is in the final months of his contract at the Hawthorns and faces an uncertain future in the West Midlands after struggling for regular gametime under returning boss Tony Mowbray.

The 32-year-old attacking midfielder, who can also play as a left-winger, many have recently fallen down the West Brom pecking order, but has proven he is capable of thriving in the second tier at his best. Last season he scored nine goals and produced one assist in 37 league games while the season before he scored six and assisted nine under ex-boss Carlos Corberan.

In a past interview with the Shropshire Star, Corberan in a glowing admission described Swift as player that could be a game-changer. The Valencia boss told the outlet: “When the good players put all the effort in the pitch (then) at the end they have more possibilities to make the difference like he is doing and how he is helping the team.”
