What Lewis Hall did before Newcastle United defeat as Liverpool myth rubbished again

Despite Lewis Hall’s best efforts, Newcastle United lost to Liverpool

Lewis Hall went to Anfield knowing he had to deal with the most in-form forward in world football – Mohamed Salah – for the second of three times in as many months. However, there will have been little thinking about their St James’ Park meeting in December and even less attention given to their future encounter at Wembley next month.

Instead, Hall and his Newcastle United team-mates are attempting to focus on the task directly in front of them – despite lingering talk that one eye may already be on the Carabao Cup final in a matter of weeks. That particular accusation was levelled at Eddie Howe’s side after the 4-0 defeat at Manchester City and brought up in passing after almost throwing away a three-goal lead at Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Before Wednesday night’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, however, Hall attempted to explain away the myth that Newcastle are focused on anything but their Premier League and FA Cup exploits at present.
Asked on TNT Sports by interviewer Becky Ives: ‘is it a bonus if you learn anything for League Cup final as well?”, Hall responded: “I think so but also we’re not really focusing on that at the moment.

“[It’s a] big game tonight and every league game at the moment is important so we’re looking to do as well as we can tonight and hopefully win the game.”

Hall tried his best to keep Salah quiet during the midweek showdown, but the Egyptian helped himself to an assist for Alexis Mac Allister in the second period. Liverpool, as a collective, were rather impressive – barely moving out of second gear as they stretched their lead at the Premier League once more.

Meanwhile, for Newcastle, it is now three league defeats out of four with Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup to come on Sunday, before a trip to West Ham United and then the rematch with Liverpool. The message, as ever, from Howe will be remaining the same: no internal focus being placed on Wembley just yet.

“If [having one eye on the final] is the case, we’re in trouble,” Howe said earlier this month. “Because our Premier League season will be over really by the time that final comes around, it can’t be the focus.
