Premier League confirm Anthony Taylor decision after Nottingham Forest row

Week 6 of the Premier League season has seen Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor find their roles following a very contentious weekend in England’s top tier.

The sixth week of the Premier League will see Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor return to officiating. After a contentious weekend, the premier league has confirmed that both will play on the field this coming Saturday.

Oliver was in the middle of a number of controversial calls during Manchester City’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Arsenal, as John Stones’ equalizer in the 98th minute gave Pep Guardiola’s squad a point.

Leandro Trossard received two yellow cards in the first half, the second of which was controversially handed for purportedly kicking the ball away, leaving Arsenal incensed. Oliver called the England international out of position seconds before Arsenal’s opening goal, which infuriated Kyle Walker and his teammates at City.

Oliver will officiate Chelsea’s match against Brighton on Saturday as the video assistant, but on Monday night (Sept. 30), he will take on the primary position for Southampton’s south coast rivalry against Bournemouth.

After acting as the fourth official during Nottingham Forest‘s exciting 2-2 draw with Brighton, Taylor is returning to officiating. Even after referee Rob Jones first thought Morgan Gibbs-White had won the ball, he helped convince Jones to give Gibbs-White his second yellow card for a challenge on Joao Pedro.

Jones dismissed Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo, and Cobbs-White was heard yelling as he departed the field. Taylor was not selected on the previous weekend’s refereeing roster after presiding over a contentious match between Chelsea and Bournemouth the week before, which saw an incredible 14 yellow cards given.

At Molineux, Taylor will celebrate his return by officiating a match involving one of the best teams in England, Liverpool, against Wolves. Throughout his tenure, the referee has officiated more games for Liverpool than any other team, including their 3-0 victory over Manchester United earlier in September.

But in Week 6, Jones will not be leading the team; rather, he will be the fourth official for Manchester City’s trip to Newcastle. This does not, however, lessen the strain on City as they attempt to regain winning form on difficult terrain.

Josh Smith will officiate Forest’s match against Fulham at home on Saturday. Neil Davies and James Mainwaring will assist Smith. The fourth official is Tim Robinson, while the VAR is John Brooks.
