“My hunch is” – Pundit reacts to Chris Davies’ big Alfie May call at Birmingham City

“My hunch”is”—Pundit reacts to Chris Davies’ big Alfie May call at Birmingham City.

George Elek, an EFL pundit, thinks Chris Davies’ choice to start Lyndon Dykes and Jay Stansfield together this weekend will lead to a lot more of these pairings throughout the season.

After joining the Blues during the summer transfer window from Queens Park Rangers, Dykes got his first start for the team in a 2-0 victory over Rotherham United this past weekend.

In the previous 3-1 success over Wrexham, Alfie May, a fellow frontman, was chosen; but, his performance against the Millers demonstrated just how important the former R’s man will be going forward.

The devastating impact the duo had against a side who will have also harboured promotion aspirations this season, has given Elek reason to believe that it is a pairing that Chris Davies will be erring towards more often than not.

Throughout the weekend, Dykes’ muscular presence up top provided a another dimension to the City club as he repeatedly outwitted the Millers’ defence while also creating opportunities for his teammates to take advantage of.

The journey to the New York Stadium gave the Scot the ideal chance to prove his worth after a rumoured £1 million move to St Andrew’s last month, and he did not let fans down after making two substitute appearances prior to the trip to Yorkshire.

Despite May scoring four goals in his first five league games of the season prior to the weekend and only playing for the final 12 minutes of the previous game, Dykes entered the team in May’s stead.

Despite May’s impressive start to the season, Elek is optimistic that the starting attack duo from the weekend will be something we see a lot more of in the weeks and months to come, especially with £20 million man Stansfield still contributing to goals.

“I was impressed by Stansfield in the whole game. It was interesting to note that Chris Davies, despite Alfie May’s

good start to the season, switched it up and played Lyndon Dykes up top through the middle, and Stansfield as the

ten, and it really worked,” Elek said in an interview with the Not The Top 20 Podcast.

Appearances 6 2 3
Starts 5 2 1
Goals 4 3 0

Dykes taking up the muscular centre back position gave Stansfield a lot more leeway and meant that he was

constantly vanishing into thin air.

“We’ll see how that plays out, but my suspicion is that this is mostly what we’re going to see. It makes more sense for

Stansfield to be playing off Dykes than it does to try to fit May and Stansfield in together.”

George Elek backs Alfie May to contribute towards Birmingham City success

Given that Stansfield and May play comparable roles for the squad, it is likely that May will see less playing time as

Davies continues to play the player who has scored three goals in his first two games back at St Andrew’s.

There will undoubtedly be a fight for minutes at the business end of the pitch for the Blues throughout the season,

despite the fact that May has also started the season in scorching form and earned his team several points with his goals.

Elek thinks we are beginning to see the best of City as they ramp up for the upcoming season. That competition is

only going to bring out the best in all of the strikers at the club.

Jay Stansfield v Wrexham

He went on to say, “It is a fantastic alternative to have, and I am confident that May will play a role this season.

“It was another example of Birmingham…” My criticism of them in the first few games of the season was that they

didn’t appear to be light years ahead of their opponents.

“They were having to rely on late games in marginal games, but I think when it has mattered against both Wrexham

and against Rotherham, in a week they have been well clear.”
