Wayne Rooney: Plymouth Argyle can compete with best teams in Championship - Plymouth Live

Wayne Rooney, the manager of Plymouth Argyle, was really impressed by one West Brom player this weekend.

Josh Maja scored his sixth goal in six Championship appearances, leading West Bromwich Albion to a 1-0 victory at The Hawthorns.

Another three points sees the Baggies maintain their extraordinary unblemished start to the season, with 16 points from an available 18. Maja has been instrumental in that run, giving West Brom a solid and regular outlet in the centre striker position.

Rooney, who has guided Plymouth to one victory, two draws, and three defeats in his first half-dozen games in command, complimented Maja on his excellent effort.

“He’s a fascinating player who is difficult to prepare for. After Saturday’s encounter, Rooney told Express & Star, “We were aware of him dropping into a false nine position.”

“At times, I thought we handled him well, but when a player is confidence in scoring goals, they always seem to have that one chance and can make the difference.

“I thought we managed him effectively at times, but he creates the moment that wins the game. He’s a terrific player, and West Brom are a solid side that is experienced and knows how to win games,” Rooney added.

Maja, who is having his finest start to an English season, would undoubtedly appreciate the praise from a renowned former player. Rooney is, of course, Manchester United’s all-time leading striker and previously topped the England international charts before Harry Kane took over, so he knows a thing or two about scoring.
