19 year-old arrested on suspicion of theft after ‘car seen on wrong side of M11’
Firefighters rushed to a Highwoods home after a tumble dryer caught fire.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called to Asquith Drive at 1.14pm today after neighbours saw smoke and heard a smoke alarm sounding next door.
The emergency service entered the property which was filled with smoke and found a tumble dryer was on fire.
Crew manager Stephen Adamson said: “We know people are busy and leave their tumble dryers, washing machines and dishwashers running during the day when they’re not at home.
Fire – A tumble dryer was left unattended
“But it’s simply not worth taking the risk. The fire has completely damaged their extension.
“Luckily the neighbours heard the smoke alarm, spotted the smoke and did the right thing by calling 999.
“A few more hours and the outcome could have been a lot worse. Take care when using your white goods and do not leave them running unattended.”
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service has issued advice about using tumble dryers following the incident, including always following the manufacturer’s instructions, not using them at night or while unattended, cleaning the filters after each use, removing items from the dryer immediately and shaking them for a quicker cool-down, and ensuring the appliance has its own socket.
