Scott Parker talks about Burnley’s capacity to overcome resolute defenses following a late victory over Portsmouth.
Nevertheless, Parker’s team persevered until the absolute end, and they were rewarded when Josh Brownhill stole the three points far into stoppage time.
The home team had to hang onto possession earlier, which led to a number of sideways passes as they searched in vain for a way through and infuriated the terraces.
Parker does not want his players to revert to hoping balls into the box, even though he does want his team to play with more pace and intensity.
“First half of our play was a little slow, but there were other reasons why. In terms of duels, we gave them a foothold at some points, he claimed.
We had periods when we moved the ball pretty well, but we really missed that last spark. We addressed this at halftime by adjusting our positions and exercising the patience we needed to display.
“We’re all desperate to win football matches, we’re desperate to score goals but in moments we needed to show more patience, especially in the final area and the box to work openings.
“I never want us to be a team that just slings balls into the box and it becomes a 50/50 ball, where a good defence will just head the ball away.
“I think both goals proved that really, because we had a bit more patience and produced a couple of more passes to open spaces and that can be the difference.
“Jeremy’s [Sarmiento] goal was exactly that and the second goal was that as well. It’s a direct ball first of all but then we retain it, we keep it on the left side to find the opening for Josh who is on the edge of the box free and the ball trickles in.”
