Nightmare spell for forgotten Sunderland man may be coming to an end
The 20-year-old has only made 21 senior appearances for the team in two and a half years since joining the Stadium of Light from Costa Rican team Herediano in 2022.
This past January, Bennette was on the verge of leaving the promotion-threatened Black Cats for a League One opportunity with Charlton Athletic, but the deal never came to pass.
However, as LZN Cherkasy is discussing an agreement to bring Bennette to Ukraine, a move abroad might still be in the cards for the young Costa Rican international.
According to a post on X by Kevin Jimenez, who revealed that Bennette was joining Sunderland in 2022, “Ukraine’s LNZ is interested in Jewison Bennette, negotiations ongoing.”
Additionally, LNZ Cherkasy, who are presently ranked ninth in the Ukrainian Premier League, have plenty of time to finalize the transaction because the winter transfer market in Ukraine doesn’t close until March 11.
Bennette might benefit from a move after being linked to a move to another English team during the most recent January transfer window.

The Sunderland Echo reported that Charlton were in for him on deadline day, but missed out after they ran out of time to conclude the deal, not signing the relevant papers by the 11pm curfew. With Bennette limited almost exclusively to U21 appearances this season, a move away could be vital for the 20-year-old to truly kickstart his career, as he showed real promise at the start of his Sunderland tenure.
Regis Le Bris, the manager of Sunderland, has decided that Jewison Bennette is surplus to requirements and has not included him in any Championship squad this season.
Bennette’s only appearance under the current Sunderland manager was a brief nine-minute cameo during their August Carabao Cup First Round defeat at Preston North End.
Bennette also helped Chris Rigg score his first senior league goal late in the Black Cats’ 5-0 victory over Southampton, which was his sole Championship appearance since his 2022–2023 debut season.
In a 2-2 draw with Watford, he came off the bench to score Sunderland’s first league goal in just his second league game.
These moments of brilliance demonstrate that, despite just being 20 years old, Bennette is capable of getting better with the correct direction.
This is unlikely to occur at Sunderland, and the Costa Rican might benefit from a transfer to the Ukrainian team LNZ and regular football.
