Falkirk captain shares what Brendan Rodgers told his team after League Cup defeat at Celtic Park

The talk about Falkirk and their League Cup loss at Celtic Park continues following John McGlynn’s side’s valiant display on Sunday afternoon.

The Championship club surprised Celtic by taking a 2-1 lead into halftime at Celtic Park.

Brendan Rodgers blamed himself for Celtic’s poor first-half performance, despite making eight changes to his squad following their midweek Champions League success.

However, Celtic’s power and class eventually showed through in a 20-minute blitz that saw Rodgers’ side transform a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 victory.

After the match, Brendan Rodgers showed class by visiting the Falkirk dressing room at full time. Coll Donaldson, the Bairns captain, has relayed what the Hoops coach told his squad.

Celtic boss gives Falkirk ‘the biggest mark of respect’

The Falkirk captain confesses his squad was gutted at full-time, but he did share ‘the highest mark of respect’ the Celtic manager showed him and his team in the Parkhead changing rooms.

In an interview with The Big Football Podcast, Donaldson expressed pride in his team’s dedication to their work.

“And I think the biggest sign of respect was Brendan Rodgers coming into our changing room while the manager was still speaking and simply saying how impressed he was.

“Not only in the manner we played during the game, but also in his analysis of how we built up, he stated it was a pleasure to watch how we play and that we do it the same way each week.

“So I think these compliments are nice but I think as a professional footballer, we were still disappointed with the way that the last 20 minutes went.”

Falkirk and Celtic deserve League Cup plaudits

It goes without saying that Falkirk deserves every accolade following their brave Celtic Park effort. It’s admirable how they pressed Rodgers’ side and caused mistakes in order to grab the lead twice.

However, Celtic should be commended for remaining professional and sticking to their work, ultimately winning.

Rodgers’ tactical adjustments were spot on, with each substitute making an immediate impact.

Adam Idah’s quickness complemented Nicolas Kuhn’s ruthlessness, as he set up two goals and scored two to help Celtic get back in the game.

It was one of the best games of the season, and being broadcast live on television was a fantastic advertisement for Scottish football, for which both teams deserve a lot of praise.
