West Bromwich Albion fans are continuing in dreamland, following a 1-0 win against Plymouth Argyle in Championship play, further solidifying their team’s status as early league leaders.

Carlos Corberan’s Baggies are yet to lose a league game this season, with five victories and one draw from six overall matches, as promotion hopes begin to be mooted.

Josh Maja has been fantastic for his promotion-chasing team thus far, overcoming any injury concerns that hindered his first full season in the West Midlands to eventually become a goal machine.

Maja’s Season So Far

The former Sunderland youth product has been a revelation for Corberan’s side this season, having only managed to stay fit for 12 Championship games last year, with only one pitiful goal coming his way.

The 25-year-old forward is now the Baggies’ top scorer, with six goals in six league matches, including the winning goal against Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims.

Corberan’s team aims to maintain their position at the top of the second tier by continuing to score every 81 minutes.

West Brom are achieving these sensational results despite not getting the best out of Mikey Johnston on his permanent return, having been placed on the substitutes bench for his first two league games back at the Baggies, with the West Brom manager well aware that the former Celtic man can tear second-tier defences apart when at his peak.

His seven second-tier goals from 18 games helped West Brom win a playoff berth last season and will undoubtedly come in useful this time around, even if he is being held out of the starting XI by a resurgent Karlan Grant.

Surprisingly, despite Maja and Johnston appearing to be key players as their team seeks promotion, the entertaining attacking duo earn less per week combined than injury-prone Daryl Dike, according to Capology, who is still sidelined following a horrific injury against Ipswich Town in February of this year.

Dike’s wages at West Brom

Despite reoccurring injury issues, the forgotten American striker still earns a substantial weekly salary of £32.3k at the Hawthorns, according to the site.

Despite Dike’s limited availability in 2024, Maja has been a consistent presence with his team in the second tier.

Top five highest earners at West Brom – 24/25
Player Wage
1. Mason Holgate £70k-per-week
2. Daryl Dike £32.3k-per-week
3. Jed Wallace £25k-per-week
4. Paddy McNair £25k-per-week
5. John Swift £22.5k-per-week

While Dike is the second highest earner in the Baggies camp presently, Maja and Johnston earn a lesser £17k-per-week and £12.5k-per-week respectively – or £29.5k-per-week combined – despite contributing far more than the perpetually sidelined former Barnsley player.

The ex-Tykes center-forward has scored eight goals in 32 outings for the Baggies. Maja is only one goal behind him with 13 less games played.

The 24-year-old has lately returned to training in order to compete with Maja. However, West Brom may be tempted to remove him from the squad due to his frequent visits to the Hawthorns treatment center.

He could give West Brom more options, but with summer signing Devante Cole not clamouring for more opportunities up front, there will be concern that another injury will be aggravated soon, and the patient Baggies will be back at square one with their high earner.
