Sunderland’s Championship rivals eye ground expansion to 53k – eclipsing the Stadium of Light as the biggest.

The Championship opponents of Sunderland are considering expanding their stadium to hold 53,000 spectators.

The opponents of Sunderland for the Championship have revealed plans to expand their stadium.

With a 48,707 capacity, the Black Cats currently hold the largest ground in the Championship; however, Leeds United wants to expand Elland Road.

The Yorkshire club has declared intentions to expand its stadium’s seating capacity to 53,000 spectators. Elland Road Stadium can accommodate 37,645 spectators at this time, and it has been full for each of the previous six seasons’ home games. There is a waiting list of 26,000 Leeds United supporters for season tickets.

Elland Road will surpass Sunderland’s Stadium of Light as the largest in the Championship according to the plans, which would mean.

Leeds United’s chairman and president, Paraag Marathe, stated: “We understand the significance Elland Road holds for Leeds United supporters and the larger community.” 49ers Enterprises is the club’s parent company. It is an unheard-of chance to modernise a stadium that is a century old and honour Leeds United’s heritage.

“Our plans serve as a reminder of our dedication to the club’s long-term prosperity, and I’m thrilled that thousands more fans will be able to attend every game in a venue that still has the distinctive Elland Road vibe. We’re excited to discuss our ideas with supporters and the neighbourhood to get their feedback.”

The Championship matchup between Sunderland and Leeds United takes place at the Stadium of Light on October 4.
