Andoni Iraola says Bournemouth ‘must do better’ following their 3-0 defeat to Liverpool

Andoni Iraola says Bournemouth ‘must do better’ following their 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

The Bournemouth boss calls for his side to ‘do better’ and keep focus after conceding a 3-0 defeat against Arne Slot’s Liverpool.

Darwin Núñez and Luis Díaz goals in the first half sealed Bournemouth’s destiny as they lost 3-0 to Liverpool at Anfield.
After some careless plays by Bournemouth’s custodian, defenders and midfielders, all three of the hosts’ goals were scored in a furious 11 minutes in Liverpool.

Cherries manager Antonio Iraola summed up the match in the post-match news conference by stating, “I think they [Liverpool] were better when it mattered, and when the game was on the line.”

“We had a goal disallowed and other opportunities, but they made the crucial difference when it mattered most in a very open game.” Although the beginning wasn’t all that different, what you do after the number three isn’t really that important.

Cherries found wanting

Iraola continued by discussing how the club’s inexperience playing against a team like Liverpool might have given the hosts more room to create their opportunities.

“We feel like we were doing well and having our chances,” Ibrahima continued, adding that the team had a strong first half until the goal.

“We lost our focus and effort after the first goal; you cannot allow this to happen. The shift in momentum was most likely caused by inexperience. We must settle the score after giving up the opening goal because we are a young team.”

“In the end, it was sufficient even though we lost a little structure for a short while.”

Even the most upbeat Bournemouth supporters might not have had high expectations going into the match, but they could be disappointed that the team lost the game in the first half despite losing so much poise in such a short period of time.

Plenty of chances but a lack of goals

Even with the lopsided result, Bournemouth remained a threat because they finished with 19 total shots, which

was exactly the same as Liverpool.

In addition, the group made Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher make seven saves, and they even had an

early goal disallowed for offside.

“The problem is that it is not the first game where we have a lot of chances but don’t get the goals we expected,”

Ibrahima commented in response to this.

“You have to take your chances when you are playing well because they will definitely punish you, especially at this

level.”

“We did more than enough to score. It is difficult for us to accept. What you do in the boxes makes the difference and we need to improve on certain things,” he finished.

That is something many Bournemouth fans would agree with and arguably accept this was also a problem last

season.

A week prior, Bournemouth suffered a setback at home against Chelsea despite having numerous opportunities to

score, including two attempts to hit the woodwork and a penalty denied in the first half.

The squad needs to start scoring goals soon if they are to play to their full ability this season and finish in a league

that matches their abilities. This is especially true after they have gone two games in a row without scoring when

they may have.

Iraola given a third yellow for the season

If the outcome did not satisfy Bournemouth supporters, their manager might not be available for their upcoming

league match against Southampton.

Iraola received his third yellow card of the year after being booked for disobedience.

When questioned about the incident, the Spaniard had a different opinion from the referee, who had stated that

Iraola had been penalised for gesturing to one of Liverpool’s players that they were booked.

“I hope we can reverse this; I think there has been a misunderstanding,” he stated.

“I was requesting an offside when they booked me for asking for a yellow card. I was hoping for an offside rather

than an advantage, and there was nothing going on that would allow me to request a yellow card.

The Berries CEO was dubious if it was feasible to appeal the ruling and lift the ban when the BBC reporter

questioned Iraola about it. He said, “I don’t know how this works here, in Spain for sure, but I don’t know.”

Bournemouth will be hopeful that an appeal can be submitted and they can have their manager on the touchline

for what is expected to be a fast, exciting game at home against Southampton on Monday, 30 September.
