Barry Bannan fires message to Sheffield Wednesday supporters after Luton Town blow

Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan took to social media to share a message with supporters after his side’s 2-1 defeat at Luton Town on Saturday, insisting that results will soon improve.

Wednesday survived in the Championship last season thanks to a spectacular turnaround under Danny Rohl, and anticipation was high coming into the new season after a successful summer transfer window.

The Owls got their season off to a great start with a 4-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle on the first weekend, but things have gotten much tougher since then, as they were defeated by the Hatters on Saturday for the fourth time in five league games.

Following a dominant first half, Wednesday deservedly took the lead shortly after the break when Barry Bannan volleyed home from Yan Valery’s cross, but the game turned in the 74th minute when Luton were awarded a penalty after Di’Shon Bernard was controversially adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, and the defender was also sent off.

Carlton Morris converted the subsequent penalty, and with only two minutes of normal time remaining, the striker added his second from close range to secure all three points for the Hatters.

The Owls performed a much-improved performance, but they are now in the relegation zone, and things will not get any easier with a game against league leaders West Bromwich Albion at Hillsborough this weekend.

Barry Bannan issues positive Sheffield Wednesday message

In a social media post, Bannan urged Wednesday fans to band together in the midst of their dismal form, claiming that if they can sustain the kind of performance they demonstrated against Luton, their results will improve.
“A difficult decision to make on Saturday. Stick united and keep pushing; results will follow. “Away end was brilliant, thank you,” Bannan said on Instagram.

Bannan’s point of view appears to be shared by his manager, with Rohl declaring after Saturday’s game that the Owls did not deserve to lose and asserting that his team is on the right track.

“The better team lost. The direction and improvement are there. This was a step closer to what I wanted to see,” Rohl told BBC Radio Sheffield.

“If we work in this manner, we will earn points. We received a 50-50 ruling against us last week and again today [for the penalty].

“When I looked in our box, we got a corner, and Di’Shon (Bernard) went down and there was nothing, it was a little difficult to handle.

“The players on the pitch should decide the game and not somebody else.”
