West Brom facing possible injury blow v Sheffield Wednesday

West Bromwich Albion are sweating over the fitness of star midfielder Jayson Molumby ahead of their meeting with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Molumby is apparently “touch-and-go” for the Baggies’ trip to Hillsborough this weekend, according to a story from The Star over the weekend.

The Irish international was removed with 20 minutes remaining in Albion’s 3-0 away win over Portsmouth earlier this month, and he was not included in Carlos Corberan’s matchday squad that defeated Plymouth Argyle 1–0 on Saturday.

Corberan will not want to be without his hardworking center midfielder for a lengthy period of time, as he has played a key role in the club’s outstanding start to the 2024/25 season, which has seen Albion sit atop the Championship after six games.

Molumby’s availability for Owls trip is up in the air

According to The Star, West Brom are hoping Molumby will be able to play in Saturday’s game against Sheffield Wednesday, but the situation appears to be in doubt.

Corberan will not hurry the 25-year-old back into the starting lineup if he is not fully prepared, given his importance to the Baggies.

Corberan said in an interview with the Express & Star following Albion’s win over Plymouth: “Fortunately, it is not a serious injury. He got a grade one B injury in the calf last week that will keep him out of the team for seven to ten days, so we’ll see how he goes.”

Molumby has been an important part of West Brom’s recent success, as indicated by his selection as the club’s supporters’ player of the season for 2022/23.

But a foot ailment sidelined him for the second part of last season, and after appearing to have put that injury behind him in the early weeks of the season, this fresh setback will be frustrating.

Albion’s summer signing looks capable of picking up the slack when needed

However, one player’s misfortune becomes another player’s opportunity, as Uros Racic demonstrated last Saturday.

The Serbian international earned his first start for West Brom in their most recent match, a 1-0 victory against Plymouth, and it was Racic who set up Josh Maja to score the winning goal.
The 26-year-old made a brilliant run in behind the Plymouth defence, demonstrating his offensive intelligence, before whipping a superb low pass over the penalty area and into the six-yard box, where the onrushing Maja tapped the ball home from three yards out.

Racic, who signed a season-long loan contract from Italian side Sassuolo in the final week of the summer transfer window, appears to be a guy Corberan will struggle to keep out of the starting lineup, even if he has his pick of midfielders.

His towering presence in the heart of the ground provides the Baggies with a whole different weapon to use, with his height and stature surely playing a role in set-pieces and winning those crucial midfield battles.

But the Serb also appears to be a very neat ball player, as Corberan appears to have put together a really strong spine in this West Brom team, with the likes of John Swift and Alex Mowatt providing the Albion manager with great depth in the middle of the pitch.
