Williams sympathises with Martin after late Ipswich equaliser

FORMER Premier League defender turned pundit Ashely Williams sympathised with Russell Martin after Southampton conceded a late equaliser to Ipswich on Saturday.

Tractor Boys captain Sam Morse watched a deflected shot rocket into the top corner, securing a draw for the visitors in extra time.

Martin lamented his team’s failure to execute the detail in the last minutes, implying that nervousness took over after doing so effectively up until that moment.

Watching the goal replay, former Wales captain Williams said, “He’s got a point because it’s a real sickener for Southampton.”

“It came from something he anticipated more from. Harwood-Bellis produced an excellent defensive header.

“It came from something he anticipated more from. Harwood-Bellis delivered an amazing defensive header. Then Armstrong made a decision. He needed to apply pressure on the ball, but he didn’t. “Aribo lets the runner run off him.”That’s particularly frustrating because Southampton had four defenders inside the post, yet Hirst still gets a header right in the center of the goal.

“It leads to a corner, which they clear with a header, but no one is on the edge of the box. There is always at least one player on the border of the box.

“I’m not sure why there aren’t any Southampton players there. Yes, they go to press the ball. Could they be a little more brave? Yes, they can.

“I can see why Russell Martin is disappointed because they get the first contact but then they don’t do enough after it.”
