Two Sunderland players had different fortunes with their new teams over the weekend.

Sunderland loanee Pierre Ekwah suffered an 8-0 defeat at new club St. Etienne on Friday.

The midfielder joined the Ligue 1 club on deadline day last month and has since become a regular in St. Etienne’s starting lineup, playing 180 minutes. Ekwah’s debut ended in a 1-0 win over LOSC Lille, but his second outing was a historically terrible outcome for his new team.

St. Etienne defeated OGC Nice 6-0 at halftime, the first time a Ligue 1 team has lost so many goals in the first half of a game since the turn of the millennium, and the final result was the Loire’s club’s biggest top-flight defeat since 1951. Many fans departed the stadium before the second half began.

After the game, St. Etienne manager Olivier Dall’Oglio stated, “The feeling is one of shame.” We are not proud of what we have produced. When you ignore the fundamentals against a good squad, you’re punished.”

Dall’Oglio apologized for his team’s performance and said he “understood” the departure of away fans at half-time. The players can’t either. We anticipated the season would be challenging.I am irritated, but I will not express it now. I’ll start by asking for explanations.”

Luis Hemir Semedo, a Sunderland loanee, assisted Juventus’ Next Gen team in their 1-1 Serie C match against Trapani this weekend. The striker was another deadline-day departure from Wearside, and he made his full Juventus debut on Sunday evening after making two cameo appearances off the bench. The Turin giants started hesitantly, with their Sicilian opponents grabbing a first-half lead, but Hemir proved instrumental in their ultimate comeback.

After the half, Juve’s official website reported veteran striker Simone Guerra as receiving a “excellent” ball from the Black Cats loanee and scoring an equalizer, resulting in a draw.
