President explains decision to loan player to Burnley – Insists ‘he’s our asset’ amid claims of Clarets clause
On deadline day, Burnley signed Marcus Edwards on loan from Sporting until the end of the season.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas spoke to Sporting TV, and A Bola reported on it. He discussed the Lions’ choice to loan out the 26-year-old to Burnley during the past transfer window.
Edwards had already lost his place at the Portuguese club before Rui Borges took over on Boxing Day. His game time was limited due to repeated reports in Portugal of a disciplinary concern.
Sporting were apparently looking to sell the 26-year-old in the winter market due to his ‘disconnected mentality’, leading to his loan to Burnley.
According to the Championship team’s official statement, there is no requirement to make the players stay permanent. On February 2nd, Record reported the Clarets will sign Edwards for €10 million plus €1 million in bonuses if they earn promotion to the Premier League.
Burnley sit third in the rankings, two points behind second-place Sheffield United and four behind leaders Leeds United, with the latter two having one game in hand.
Varandas insists that the attacker remains a ‘asset’ for the Portuguese club.
He stated that the decision to move the Englishman on loan to Burnley was made by Sporting’s management. “He’s our asset; he’s talented, and we believe in him.”
“Obviously, we have to be better to bring in Marcus Edwards, and he has to be better to give his all. “He’s our player, and we thought it was best to loan him out.”
Since joining Burnley, the attacker has scored twice in four appearances.
