Regis Le Bris blamed Anthony Patterson’s own goal for Sunderland’s lack of success against a strong Hull City team.

The Tigers won their fourth away win in five games at the Stadium of Light, inflicting their first home league defeat on the Black Cats, who saw their slim chances of automatic promotion dashed against Ruben Selles’ well-organised side.

City took the lead 18 minutes in, thanks to former Black Cats loanee Joe Gelhardt’s corner kick, which was headed in by Patrick Roberts at the near post.

Later in the half, Dan Neil was offside. In the second period, Matt Crooks’ backheel appeared to make it 2-0, but it was ruled out by the assistant.

Despite City’s strong defense and luck, they were unable to add to their 50-goal record with only two timid shots at Ivor Pandur, as admitted by the Frenchman.

“The own goal transformed the dynamic of the game because the opponent then presented different issues. “We tried to break the low block and couldn’t find a solution,” Le Bris admitted.

“It’s unfortunate because in this type of game, minor errors can have a significant impact. We must reflect on our mistakes in order to enhance our game. It is not a coincidence (aside from a set piece); we must ask the questions. Following that, the group’s energy level was normal. We tried, but it was not enough.

“It was the 34th game of the season. We’ve got a tiny bunch. That can be a good thing since everyone is active, but when we have injuries, we realize there may be a lack of depth in some positions. This is only one of the squad’s characteristics this season. There are advantages and disadvantages; we simply need to strive to manage things effectively. I’m hoping to see a reaction. I aspire to have the ability to react.”
