Leeds target Jonathan Rowe scores an incredible 95th-minute solo goal as Marseille beat Lyon 3-2.
Despite Leeds United’s best efforts to raid Daniel Farke’s team in the summer, Jonathan Rowe made the wise decision to join Marseille, and it appeared to have paid off on Sunday.
Rowe, an England U21 international, made an impression on Norwich City last season when he joined the senior team and scored 12 goals in the Championship. Leeds moved to land the adaptable attacker in that instance.
Leeds first offered £7 million to sign Rowe, but their offer was turned down. Although it’s unclear if Leeds ever made a better offer, the child finally relocated to France.Giants of Ligue 1 Marseille paid £17 million for Rowe.
The London-born ace had not done much before the weekend. One yellow card, three substitute appearances, and no goals or assists. But in a thrilling match against Lyon on Sunday night, everything was different.
Even though Marseille, under the leadership of Roberto De Zerbi, was reduced to 10 men after just five minutes of play in a game that had everything, they managed to pull off an amazing 3-2 victory away from home.

Lyon dominated the first forty-five minutes after Leonardo Balerdi’s red card, but Alexandre Lacazette missed a penalty. Lyon did take the lead, but in minute 82, Marseille equalised and then took the lead again.
On the other hand, Lyon’s Rayan Cherki scored after 93 minutes. While many would have assumed the game was over, Rowe wasn’t. He hasn’t made much of an impression in France yet, but on Sunday he made the greatest announcement of his visit.
Taking possession of the ball on the left side, he spins, evades several Lyon defenders, and curls in a risky shot from outside the area. An official X account for Ligue 1 shared a video of Sunday’s winner.
Did Leeds make a mistake in not pushing harder to sign Rowe?
During Sunday’s performance, for sure. There’s more to it than that, though, primarily the enormous sum of money Marseille needed to entice Norwich to sell its academy product to De Zerbi’s new team in France.
Joe Rodon and Largie Ramazani were Leeds’ two largest summer acquisitions, costing £10 million apiece. The team was unable or unwilling to spend much more than that on a single player in the summer transfer window.
Although Rowe is a tremendous talent, the price tag was perhaps too much given Leeds’ status in the Championship. Perhaps Farke would have worked more to complete a deal for Rowe if Leeds had been promoted.
