Norwich City will be thrilled with key transfer decisions after Watford exploits: View.

It seems that Norwich City’s season may have reached a tipping point this past weekend.

With just one victory in their first five league games this season, the Canaries have had a challenging start under Johannes Hoff Thorup. Early-season losses to Oxford United and Swansea City raised alarms, and in their two draws with Blackburn and Sheffield United, they gave up points from a winning position.

The summer transfer market proved to be difficult as several important players from the previous campaign left the team. Before Jon Rowe signed a loan agreement with Marseille that contained a buyout commitment, Gabriel Sara traded Norfolk for Turkey when he joined Galatasaray.

Since Sara and Rowe were so important to Norwich last season, Thorup was given a few serious problems to make sure his team could function without them.

The fact that Norwich was able to retain onto quality midfield player Kenny McLean despite other teams’ interest is a significant plus from their summer campaign.

This past weekend, in a commanding display against Watford, McLean truly showed his worth. It may turn out to be a watershed moment for Norwich and Thorup.

Norwich was eager to make amends on Saturday following a humiliating 1-0 loss to Swansea the previous weekend. It was sure to be a challenging afternoon as Watford, the opponents, arrived at Carrow Road having won three of their previous five league games.

As is so frequently the case, Kenny McLean began the game in the middle of midfield with the captain’s armband around his bicep, and it did not take him long to pick up his first assist of the afternoon.

He sent the ball to Callum Doyle after three minutes, and the Norwich player scored the first goal with a stunning strike from 25 yards out. The strike was mentioned in relation to the goal rather than the straightforward assist, although McLean will undoubtedly add.

After Watford levelled, it appeared as though the teams would draw even going into halftime. That was before McLean showed up with his second assist, which was among the best in the EFL this weekend across all games. The midfield player collected the ball far inside his own half and promptly fired a long, direct ball to Borja Sainz, who skilfully brought it down and put it past the custodian.

That goal shortly before half-time turned the tide for the Canaries, who went on to win 4-1 at Carrow Road. The Scotland international concluded the afternoon with two assists and a dominant midfield position.

Summer interest in McLean

As previously said, Norwich had a difficult summer, but things nearly got worse when it appeared like Kenny McLean would be leaving.

Scottish powerhouse Rangers were reportedly eyeing the 32-year-old in June, according to The Daily Record, in anticipation of a potential summer transfer. It would have raised red flags at Carrow Road since McLean has already acknowledged that he was a lifelong Rangers supporter and that it would be an absolute dream to play for them.

But, as the Rangers and McLean apparently couldn’t agree on the deal duration, nothing came of it. Then, as the Blades looked to add midfield reinforcements in the form of Matt Grimes from Swansea and the midfielder, Sheffield United entered the picture.

And, fortunately for Norwich, nothing materialised from that interest. The way McLean played this past weekend against Watford is a great illustration of the midfield depth the Canaries can have, and they will be hoping he can continue to provide similar results throughout the schedule.
