Why Vicario avoided punishment after handball incident in Tottenham 3-1 Brentford

Why Vicario avoided punishment after a handball incident in Tottenham 3-1 Brentford.

Italian custodian Guglielmo Vicario was not sent off despite handling the ball outside of his own area during Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Brentford by Tottenham. This explains how the former Empoli goalie escaped being booked.

In the midst of Tottenham’s triumph over Brentford in the second half, Vicario arrived to claim a cross just beyond his penalty area. He was able to botch the grab, and his body was moving beyond of the penalty area due to momentum.

Vicario made a few haphazard gestures with his hands, trying to correct his mistake. In the first instance, even though his feet were outside the box at the moment, he made touch with the ball within the area.

When the replay was slowed down, it was evident that the ball was touched outside the box on the second and third occasions.

Why Vicario avoided punishment for handball against Brentford

Referee John Brooks did not spot the offence in real-time, and decided to wave play on without rewarding a free-kick. In fact, Brentford defender Kristoffer Ajer and Bess coach Thomas Frank were handed bookings for dissent instead.

Some supporters felt that Vicario should have been sent off due to the positioning of the incident, however, it did not deny a clear and obvious goalscoring opportunity, so the decision not to send him off was correct.

The referee had every right to show Vicario a yellow card, but since he did not halt play at the moment and the incident did not prevent a clear-cut opportunity for a goal, VAR decided not to get involved.

Vicario was therefore free to carry on as usual and avoid having a booking on file.
