Southampton are looking into the availability of West Brom manager Carlos Corberan.

Premier League newcomers Southampton are apparently among the teams keeping an eye on West Brom manager Carlos Corberan’s availability, following interest from Leeds United.

Corberan has been a popular at the Hawthorns since his hiring in October 2022, and his team appear primed to contend at the top of the Championship table this season, having leading the Baggies to fifth place last season.

Albion presently lead the second-tier following a strong start to the new season, with five victories and one draw in their first six games.

Football Insider reported that the Spaniard has a £2 million release clause in his contract, which might lead to interest from Leeds if Daniel Farke is fired. However, new information has surfaced regarding his probable future destination.

According to the Sunday Mirror (22 September, page 72), Corberan’s possession-based approach has piqued the interest of the Saints, who are reportedly ready to make a bid if Leeds make any progress.

They suggest that current Southampton manager Russell Martin would face scrutiny if the club’s early Premier League troubles persist, with evident reservations from their board over a one-dimensional style of play, implying that a move for Corberan to replace him in the St Mary’s bench may be on the cards.

Corberan’s departure from the Hawthorns would be surprising, especially given the possibility of promotion to a top-flight team. It’s unclear if either Leeds or Southampton would attempt to employ him soon, since both clubs have current managers.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Leicester City considered hiring the 41-year-old in the summer but chose Steve Cooper instead.

West Brom will strive to retain Carlos Corberan at all costs.

Corberan is rightly expected to be of interest to a variety of clubs looking to replace their manager in the coming months, but it is doubtful that he will leave the Hawthorns to join another Championship outfit, or even a lesser Premier League squad.

The Baggies’ progress and improvement since the Spaniard’s hiring has been extremely visible, and they must ensure he stays in charge until at least the end of the season, with promotion very much a possibility if their success continues.

The 41-year-old has been a clear success in the West Midlands thus far, with a ninth-place finish in his first season in charge after being appointed with the club in the relegation zone in October, followed by a fifth-place finish last season as the Baggies were defeated in the play-off semi-final second leg by the Saints.

His team’s climb has only continued this season, with an electrifying start that has seen them surrender only twice in six league games and not lose a Championship game yet.

To prevent teams like the Saints and Whites from swooping in, a fresh contract should be presented to him as soon as possible to prevent his purported release clause from being activated.
