In 2022, Leeds United traded Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City for £5 million, and Darko Gyabi went the other way. However, the England young midfielder hasn’t made an impression yet.
With the knowledge that their summer 2022 transfer choices had a big part in the team’s current status in the EFL and their ongoing recovery from certain contracts, Leeds may look back on those mistakes with much sorrow.
It was a huge pain to replace Kalvin Phillips, and Leeds received Darko Gyabi in exchange for trading the Yorkshire Pirlo.
Leeds seeing little in return for Gyabi investment at Elland Road
Those who witnessed Gyabi’s early struggles while playing for Leeds in the 22–23 season will remember him as a guy who was just too talented for youth football.
Leeds probably believed that their £5 million investment would quickly pay off, as evidenced by the large number of players from top academies leaving for real football careers.
The England youth international, who spent the second half of the previous season and the whole current season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, hasn’t been able to play regular games, though.
Although the 20-year-old midfielder has time on his side and will gain from playing frequently with Wayne Rooney, it appears doubtful that he will enter the Elland Road starting lineup anytime soon.
Will this season see Leeds promoted?
Leeds lost out on a number of great acquisitions when they added Gyabi to the team.
Before Gyabi signed with the team, Leeds got a first-hand look at him when he played for Man City’s u21 team at Elland Road in April 2022, coming off the bench.
He played for a very good City team that appeared better than any team in the division, including Leeds, who included players Mateo Joseph, Crysencio Summerville, Archie Gray, and Charlie Cresswell. The team dominated LS11.
Victor Orta may have made a mistake, based on who Leeds chose to recruit from City’s development system in Gyabi and who else was on the field that day.
Due to the skill of the three players starting—£58 million Romeo Lavia of Chelsea, PFA YPOTY partner Cole Palmer, and £20 million-rated James McAtee—Gyabi was compelled to wait on the bench.
Of course, any one of those three would have been a far more astute midfield addition for Leeds, but the team should also have given consideration to other players in that group.
£15 million Liam Delap, an Ipswich Town forward, got off to a start, while Oscar Bobb, a Norwegian wonder, and Carlos Forbs, a £11.4 million-rated Wolves flyer, came off the bench.
Should Leeds have been able to acquire any of these players, which is likely given City’s willingness to sell academy players for pure profit, then it seems a big mistake to not have looked there instead.
