PLAYER RATINGS: Following the Villa Clash, Wolves Players

Nick Parkes provides his player evaluations following Wolves’ loss to Aston Villa.

Sam Johnstone: Five

keeps giving up goals and puts in another extremely poor performance. Not a keeper who’ll hold you back during matches

Rayan Ait Nouri (#5)

were caught out of position multiple times, most notably for Villa’s third. His close-range effort in the first half was deflected wide, which was unfortunate for him not to score. Not a left back in the Premier League and received a silly booking.

Craig Dawson: 6

played a great game when Wolves were winning, but under Villa’s persistent pressure, we as a team fell apart. He wasn’t able to accomplish every goal very much.

Yerson Mosquera – 6

Similarly to Dawson, played well for an hour. Played in a wonderful through ball to Larsen in the first half and cleared off the line in the second. Unfortunately though, he’s picked up a serious injury and looks to be out for a while. A real shame as he’s growing into life as a Premier League centre back

Nelson Semedo – 4

Constantly getting caught out by not looking over his shoulder, had a tough game for the second week running. Seems off the pace and continues to make pointless fouls and picking up cheap bookings.

Jean-Ricner Bellegarde – 4

Our left side seems to be a real problem at the moment as neither Bellegarde nor Hwang seem to want it. A non-existent performance and offered little going forward. Had opportunities to run at people but chose to slow it down and turn back.

Joao Gomes – 5

All 3 centre midfielders had similar games. Strong and dominate in the first half, meek and chasing shadows in the second. Gomes is having a mixed start to the season but the first half he impressed and looked his menacing self.

Andre – 5

Amazing first half. Really broke up play and won absolutely everything but faded in the second.

Mario Lemina – 5

Similar to Gomes, he had a strong first half but was nonexistent in the second. In the second half, Villa’s more aggressive midfield proved to be too much for Lemina and company.

Cunha Matheus – 4

controversially poor rating because, although he looked dangerous and scored a fantastic goal in the first half, his attitude was horrible the entire 90 minutes. slapping his hands and whining to his own players nonstop. stayed offside when it would have been easy to stay onside. In the second half, Dawson even took Cunha to GON to protest about his lack of teamwork. Every player needs to get together and fight because the Wolves are going through a difficult moment. Cunha did not meet the requirements yesterday.

Jorgen Strand Larsen – 5

Quiet afternoon for the big number 9 apart from a through ball from Mosquera where his shot was saved. Needed more service from out wide.

GAME MANAGEMENT – 0

Wolves arguably had their best 45 of the season so far in the first half and we bossed Villa from early on but second half (again) was a worrying sight. We continued to play the ball out from the back despite the constant pressure from Villa’s dangerous attackers. It was clear to everyone watching what was coming yet nothing was done to change it. We look brittle and void of any real belief. Defensively naive and apart from Dawson, we lacked a commanding presence. Also, 6 yellow cards for the game shows a lack of control.
