Rangers set for ‘internal warfare’ as ‘depressing’ Ibrox news unfolds

Gary Keown believes what’s going on at Rangers at the moment compared to Celtic is “depressing” and “internal warfare” is just around the corner at Ibrox.

John Bennett’s unexpected departure from the Gers threw a significant wrench in the works of what was going on in Govan.
Celtic had a fantastic transfer window, with players like Arne Engels entering, whereas Rangers saw players like Nedim Bajrami join, but the quality difference is startling.

Keown wrote for the Daily Mail on September 21, contrasting Rangers to Celtic and questioning whether the Gers have a clear vision of where they want to go next.

“Where Celtic fans are swooning over Engels, Ibrox punters are burying their heads under the covers as former chairman Dave King starts chuntering on again from stage left,” he wrote in an email.

“Honestly, who has the stomach for months of this? It’s depressing. Just a clue that a club is going nowhere. Except for backwards, that is. To worn old faces and men who’ve been around the block before.

“King had his chance in control of the train set. He got some things correct. He got many things wrong. Then he departed. The situation does not require internal conflict or EGMs to reintegrate him.Following John Bennett’s resignation, John Gilligan has returned as interim chairman. No offense to Gilligan. He has an amazing business history, although he has previously served as a director.

Rangers need to find a clear sense of direction

As previously said, if things at Rangers weren’t terrible enough, Bennett’s resignation exacerbated the situation.

Since Steven Gerrard’s departure, the club appears to have been on a downhill spiral, with no clear direction.

Even their start to the 2024/25 season has been off the mark, with the team currently third in the league.

This may not appear to be a failure to most, but with the standards that the Gers expect of themselves, this season has been far from their best, which is why Philippe Clement’s future has been under scrutiny.
Of course, there is still time for things to change, and now that the team has returned to winning ways, things may be improving.

However, until there is a new permanent chairman who knows where he wants to take the club, it feels too far away to consider things like Champions League football, for the time being.
